Universities UK today published a report, Freedom of speech on campus: rights and responsibilities in UK universities. The report considers the role of universities in promoting academic freedom and freedom of speech, and the constraints that apply particularly in relation to security and terrorism and equality. The report was overseen by a Working Group including UUK members and was chaired by Malcolm Grant. The report looks at the meanings of free speech and academic freedom, the legal constraints relating to equality and security, the impact of charity regulation, and in particular describes the ways in which universities have addressed these issues drawing on an extensive survey of UUK members carried out in 2010.
This report forms part of a strand of work that UUK will be taking forward in the future in relation to security issues on campus. (Members can download a copy of the report from the Library page.)
